The Mixedwood plains is the smallest ecozone in Canada. But yet more then 60% of the country's population. The Niagara Falls is the most highly recognised landforms in the Mixedwood plains. "People from all over the world travel to watch the Niagara river flow over the cliff face of the Niagara Escarpment". It is considered so important that it has been declared a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) world biosphere reserve. This means that it is a internationally recognized ecosystem. Rivers and lakes occupy roughly 42% of the ecozone's total surface cover.The Mixedwood Plains is Canada's smallest ecozone, occupying only 9% of Canada's land. The ecozone consists of relatively flat plains and gently rolling hills, with its topography widely ranging from location to location. For example, flat areas can be found in the south west and south east while more rugged terrains are common near the Niagara Escarpment.
